Dean’s message

Gheorghe Plăcintă

Faculty of Medicine No. 1 was set up upon the establishment of the University, in 1945. Currently, around 3000 students study at the Faculty.

The Faculty’s mission is to ensure the management of knowledge and scientific research in line with national and international standards, in order to train competitive specialists, able to integrate themselves into various health systems, at the same time promoting the national cultural-historical values in the context of cultural diversity and providing a high level of Faculty’s international visibility. The basic objective of the Faculty is to achieve excellence and high standards of performance in all fields of its activity.

Training remains one of the fundamental tasks of the Faculty that aims at: carrying out a successful reform through flexible curricula, harmonized with national and international requirements, as well as adapted for each cycle of education and specialization; taking steps to increase the share of practical training; initiating the student-centered curricular reform, under which the didactic activity should focus on learning rather than teaching, while the practical activity should ensure the acquisition of necessary skills; treating students as partners for education and research, supporting mobility through scholarship programs. The Faculty encourages the development of special programs for high-performing students and their involvement in activities related to different disciplines; the initiation of education programs, supported by students, with a dual purpose: to train and to select those who are endowed with teaching skills; elaboration of a guide on the career path of students, which should define the knowledge and practical skills to be accumulated upon the completion of a study cycle as well as the means for the certification of these achievements.

Several activities associated with the modernization of the training process are being conducted currently by Faculty of Medicine no. 1. The organization of the training process for the specialty (clinical) disciplines has been completed through the cycle-module, with an exam at the end for some disciplines. To ensure possibilities for the mobility of students willing to move to other medical university centres, there has been implemented the system of transferable credits provided by the Bologna Process. For an actual integration of the fundamental, preclinical and clinical disciplines, the Faculty makes efforts to implement the training model through the interdisciplinary module. The Centre for Practical Skills Evaluation has been set up and the assistant-imitator status has been finalized. Virtual programs are widely implemented in fundamental, preclinical and clinical disciplines. At the University Centre for Simulation in Medical Training (UCSMT), the medical education is carried out through simulation. The curriculum of specialty disciplines studied at UCSMT has been supplemented with the annexes on required competences. In order to expand students' knowledge and skills in the field of professional training or in adjacent fields, new optional and free choice disciplines have been added to the curriculum. To develop the basic practical skills needed by a future specialist, students carry out clinical internships, starting with the first years, thus acquiring critical analysis and clinical thinking skills with the application of fundamental and specialty knowledge.

The knowledge assessment system at the promotion exams was finalized and implemented in three stages: an oral interview consisting in a clinical case solving, a written exam in the form of tests, taken by the computer-assisted method at the Academic Evaluation Centre, and a bachelor's thesis to be developped and publicly defended by the student at the end of training.

The Faculty is managed by a highly qualified and experienced academic staff. During the training process, both students and academic staff members benefit greatly from all the necessary material resources (lecture rooms, research laboratories, modern equipment, etc.) with a view to increasing the quality of the teaching and learning process, and contributing to the national and international recognition of the Faculty.
